Avalanche Girls play friendly vs LMC Lady Bobcats
The HCSA composed a team of elite players from their U16, U17, and U18 girls’ teams to compete in a friendly match against NCAA DII Lees McRae College’s women’s soccer team. The friendly match took place on August 26 at Lawson Tate Field. The match was a great opportunity for the HCSA players, many of whom aspire to play at the collegiate level in the next couple years.
The Lees McRae Bobcats won the friendly match 6-0, but the result aside, HCSA coaches Ben Birdsong and Kiki Wallace were very impressed with the performance displayed by the Avalanche girls who’s age difference ranged from 1-7 years from that of the Bobcats. The Avalanche found the college level to be a bit more physical and aggressive but did an excellent job of matching the physical level of the game.
HCSA players kicked-off the game with quite a few butterflies in the stomach with the nervousness of playing a collegiate level team in front of a collegiate coaching staff who may have also been using the opportunity to identify prospective players from HCSA. As the game progressed the Avalanche players began to gain some confidence and adapt to the level of the game. After going down 4-0 for the halftime break they came out and only conceded 2 second half goals. Overall the match was a great experience for HCSA players to experience collegiate competition and evaluate where they stack up against the next level.
